Abstract

A 100 MHz switching power supply with two-loop control is proposed for radio frequency power amplifiers. The power supply has a tracking bandwidth of 5 MHz and an estimated efficiency of 80%. The two-loop topology consists of a buck converter with an inner loop for one-cycle control and an outer loop that contains a PI compensator. With the two loops a stable feedback control is obtained with an excellent tracking. The VLSI two-loop feedback controller topology uses high-speed high-efficiency voltage comparator and current conveyors as their building blocks. AMI 0.5 μm CMOS technology is used. The converter performance is verified by means of simulations.
