Abstract

In this chapter, three-dimensional deformations inside a transparent synthetic soil model were measured non-intrusively by cross-correlating the speckle images. The speckles were generated by interaction between laser light and transparent synthetic soils. A soil profile consisting of "sand" overlying soft "clay" was simulated. The deformation and strain field under the model footing were similar to those published. Error analysis of the mechanism and system showed that the proposed method is suitable for measuring spatial deformations non-intrusively.
