Abstract

Accessing and exchanging component specific information are important to streamline information flow between design, manufacturing and construction companies and to reduce costly reworks and delays during construction operations. Availability of component specific information is also required to reduce time wasted on locating components and associated information on documents during facilities management phase. This paper introduces a model-based and RFID integrated approach for streamlining information flow within the phases of manufacturing, construction, inspection and facilities management. This paper also provides initial findings of exploratory studies conducted by the authors during design and manufacturing operations with steel manufacturers and design companies. These studies were conducted to identify information items that are exchanged between these parties and the current practice of information exchange between them. A discussion of which of the identified information items can be obtained in BIM storing design information and which information items can be transferred to or stored in RFID tags during design and manufacturing phases will accompany the initial findings presented.
