N2 - The use of the tandem process, which include the thermal gelation and chemical crosslinking, for cell encapsulation was discussed. In the cross-linking reaction, telechelic linear or star poly(propylene glycol)-bl-poly(ethylene glycol)-bl-(propylene glycol) copolymers bearing reactive end groups were used. The optimization of the macromolecular architecture and functionality of the polymer precursors for allowing the use of tandem process in encapsulation devices designed for calcium alginate was also discussed. The results show that the application of the tandem gelation in single or double nozzle encapsulators produces monodisperse beads or capsules, which are used for cell encapsulation.
