Abstract

Children's responses to hospitalization have been a research topic for decades. However, questions remain regarding the genesis and nature of the impact of hospitalization on children as well as the variables that influence children's psychosocial responses. This article reviews the literature on the psychosocial responses of children to hospitalization. Special emphasis is placed on the responses of school-aged children. In addition, recommendations for further research on this phenomenon are discussed.
