Abstract

It is shown that great distances can be spanned with a single F2-layer hop when the maximum usable frequency (MUF) just reaches 50 MHz. A model F-layer electron density profile model is presented that seems to explain this propagation irregularity. The model is consistent with observations of ionospheric conditions during periods of high solar activity during past sun spot cycle peaks.
