Abstract

The purpose of this project was to design an expansion for an existing carpool lot serving a major freeway in the Greater Toronto Area using integrated multi-criteria sustainability measures. The current lot is located on the north-western quadrant of the interchange between Guelph Line and the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW). A 2007 traffic study conducted by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) identified the current carpool lot as being unable to meet future traffic demands. It was estimated that an additional 150 parking spaces would be required to meet projected future volume. In this study four alternatives were evaluated based on criteria from all design disciplines. After selecting a preferred alternative a detailed multidisciplinary design of the selected alternative was undertaken to optimize the lot sustainability and meet the client's needs.
