Analysis of some common scanning techniques for lossless image coding

Abstract

The context based predictive techniques usually employed for lossless image compression are inherently designed with respect to a raster scan and are difficult to extend in a natural and consistent manner to work in conjunction with a Hilbert scan. On the other hand, it may be that the raster scan is inherently superior in the framework typically employed by practical losses image compression techniques. The performance of context-based lossless image coding techniques in conjunction with the Hilbert and raster scans is analyzed. Under certain assumptions, the raster scan is better than the Hilbert scan, dispelling the popular notion that using a Hilbert scan would always lead to improved performance.
