title = "Behavior of suction piles in sand",
abstract = "In the marine environment, use of suction pressure for the installation of sealed top piles (suction piles) is a promising alternative to driven pile foundations, particularly in deep water. Suction pressures may also be used for developing the axial tensile load capacity of suction piles. An experimental program involving installation and pullout of a model suction pile in sand is described. The effect of suction installation on the pullout capacity of piles is examined. Measurement of pore water pressures inside the pile indicate that liquefaction occurs during installation. Measurements of suction pressures during pullout tests indicate that substantial transient suction pressures are developed.",
