Abstract

This video serves as an online book launch for the recently published book Difference and Division in Music Education, edited by QCRC member Dr. Alexis Anja Kallio. Bringing together scholars from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Japan, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates and the United States of America, chapters consider the responsibility of music education to respond to rising social discord and tensions. Acknowledging that music education is an inherently political and ethical endeavour, the volume examines the ways that music education constructs, maintains, or challenges notions of propriety; explores the underlying values and cultures of violence that give rise to expressions of hate in music and broader society; and consider what an ethical response to hate in and through music education might entail.
