title = "Caretaker expectations and the management of pediatric asthma in the inner city: A scale development study",
abstract = "Asthma, a very serious health condition, results in morbidity and mortality that disproportionately affect children living in inner-city areas in the United States. The National Cooperative Inner-City Asthma Study examined a variety of factors related to pediatric asthma. This article describes a substudy that developed a brief three-dimensional scale, the Caretaker Expectations Regarding the Management of Pediatric Asthma Scale, to assess expectations of caretakers of children with asthma regarding management of the condition. Modest evidence about reliability and validity is provided. This article also presents an approach for developing measures of these important psychosocial constructs in disease-specific research situations.",

note = "Funding Information: This article details the creation of a scale that may serve as a partial solution to this measurement issue and presents an approach to the development of similar scales. The National Cooperative Inner-City Asthma Study (NCICAS) was funded by NIAID to expand knowledge about, and improve interventions for, inner-city African American and Latino children with asthma. Models of health-related cognitions typically focus on expectations individuals hold about their own health-related behaviors. Because NCICAS focused on four-to nine-year-olds, we hypothesized that the expectations of their caretakers regarding the management of these children{\textquoteright}s asthma would be related to the successful performance of recommended management behaviors and subsequent morbidity. No measures covering the target expectations could be found, so the Caretaker Expectations Regarding the Management of Pediatric Asthma Scale (CE)—a standardized interview that can also be used as a self-report instrument— was developed as a component of the NCICAS measurement scheme.
