Abstract

Challenges in measurement of electrical power inputs to variable speed motors and their solid-state power converters are presented. It is shown that in order to perform an accurate measurement, a high technical expertise in power meters, their parameters, and limitations as well as a thorough understanding of electrical power phenomena under distorted waveform conditions is required for a user. The topics presented address the principle of operation and basic parameters of modern power meters and analyzers. Experimental accuracy results of adjustable speed drives (ASD) efficiency measurements by three commercial power meters are given. Furthermore, the sources of measurement errors are pointed out with particular emphasis on sampling frequency and harmonic analysis.
