Abstract

The results of this study confirm the presence of several different mechanisms taking place during the cure of epoxy resins. Thermal analysis techniques, integrated by appropriate mathematical treatment of the experimental data obtained are able to distinguish between the different mechanisms and permit the calculation of important parameters such as order of reaction, activation energy and frequency factor of the curing reactions. The presence of different mechanisms of cure in different condition may explain the discrepancy between results obtained with different thermal analysis techniques (iso vs. non-isothermal). Rheological measurements showed Newtonian behavior in the temperature range studied in this work. Correlation were drawn between the extent of reaction and viscosity.
