Abstract
Racemic solketal has been of some interest to polymer synthesis in the formation and polymerization of the solketal ester of vinyl acid monomers. Moreover the diols easily derived from 1,3 dioxolanes are oxidized to aldehydes and therefore easily to carboxylic acids with gentle methods. All materials were characterized by multiple spectroscopic techniques with optical activity to monitor the configurational homogeneity. These compounds were known up to the amine in optical active form and this allowed comparisons to published rotations.
