Abstract

The high-yield formation of homogeneous cobalt/carbon spheres by pyrolysis of metallated poly(p-phenyleneethynylene) was discussed. The metallation of the alkoxy-PPE was facile and gave polycomplexes in excellent yields as greenish-black materials. The formation of micro and nanostructures was due to cobalt complexation. Analysis shows that the pyrolysis of dicobalt octacarbonyl leads to micrometer-sized, ill-defined flakes.
