The epitaxy of Al(111) on Nb(110) has been determined and studied by a combination of SEM channelling and electron tunnelling spectroscopy. At the interface, the  plane of Al was found to be parallel to the  plane of Nb. The superconducting phonon spectra of the Al provide a sensitive indication of interfacial strains extending into the Al film.
