Abstract
Customer input in the planning, design, and deployment of Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) is highly desirable in ensuring its success in serving the needs of travelers. A systematic method by which customer preferences and opinions may be incorporated into the process is proposed in this paper. The authors develop a Customer-Integrated ATIS Planning and Design process which includes goal setting, target market(s) selection, identification of customer needs and preferences, and selection of ATIS media and content; these steps culminate in a prototype of the ATIS. The Customer-Integrated ATIS Deployment process proposed by the authors consist of the trial deployment of the ATIS prototype, customer trials and feedback, modifications to the media and content, and the full deployment of the ATIS, with continuous customer feedback. The specifics of both processes are discussed in detail in this paper.
