Abstract

According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), about 33% of the world's population does not have access to the Internet as of 2023. This lack of connectivity deprives people of educational and employment opportunities and limits their access to important information and services. This can include medical information, global and regional news, and educational material covering virtually every subject. Recent initiatives to "connect the unconnected"have either failed or are characterized by exorbitant costs that are unsustainable for users in developing regions. To overcome these problems, we developed SONIC, a novel connectivity solution that utilizes AM/FM radio to deliver pre-rendered webpages. This amplifies the accessibility of the internet, as the radio network is widely available, even in developing countries. This demo shows a proof of concept of SONIC which shows promising early results.
