Abstract
Throughout its long history, dental education evolved considerably. Instead of a traditional, linear, and temporal description, this chapter will focus on the elements that constitute dental education today and their evolution from the solo, anonymous practitioner, to the first scrolls (“textbooks”), to apprenticeship, to the first dental schools, to legislation to regulate the practice and the complex network of elements and the highly regulated profession that is today.
