Abstract

A finite difference algorithm has been developed for the solution of the transport equation which can be applied to study the diffusion theory for photon migration in heterogeneous tissues. However, the accuracy of the diffusion approximation has yet to be proven for heterogeneous biological media with large gradients in the diffusion coefficient. To address this concern, the analytical solutions of the diffusion theory were compared with the calculations based on the finite difference implementation of the transport equation.
