    Abstract

Current wireless systems allow simple messaging services such as one- or two-way text messaging using Short Messaging Service (SMS), paging and voicemail. Motivated by the convergence of messaging (eg., emails) with information services (eg., request for stock quotes), entertainment (eg., interactive games), commerce (eg., advertisements) etc. in the wireless space, emerging wireless telecommunication systems envisage messaging applications with much richer media involving audio, video, web and text. In this paper, we discuss various design issues that arise in multimedia messaging from a telecommunications carrier point of view. We present a simple system design that addresses many of these issues, a key challenge being data management of (shared) multimedia messaging content.
