Abstract
Donald Trump, who presents himself as a “rugged individualist,” is as American as Daniel Boone, Billy the Kid, Theodore Roosevelt, Ann Rand, John Wayne, Rambo, and Captain America. Nevertheless, his victory is usually portrayed as similar to the rise of authoritarian populist movements that have spread across European countries.
