Abstract

A graphite fiber reinforced epoxy system was evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry, rheological measurements, and infrared and reverse-phase liquid chromatography to elucidate changes in reaction enthalpy, complex viscosity and chemical structure which accompany cure. Three cure cycles were than investigated in which heat up rate was the basic variable. Eight-ply laminates were fabricated from a commercial prepreg in both unidirectional and quasiisotropic orientations. Physical and mechanical properties evaluated include: glass transition temperature, tensile strength and modulus, fracture toughness, void content, and decomposition profile. These properties are discussed in terms of the chemorheological phenomena which occur during processing.
