Abstract

Spherical hydroxylapatite (HA) particles have been used to promote bone ingrowth fixation of intermedullary implants in the rabbit femur. Initially, the HA particles stabilize the loose fitting implants. With time, bone growth is conducted throughout the mantle of HA surrounding the implant. In this model, stabilization of the implant with HA particulate produced a six-fold increase in pull-out strengths, 7 weeks post-operatively.
