Abstract
Magnetorotational instability was experimentally observed and characterized. A system consisting of liquid sodium between differentially rotating spheres, with an imposed coaxial magnetic field was used. The observed patterns and torque increases were characterized and it was demonstrated that such instability could occur from a hydrodynamic turbulent background. The nonlinear saturated amplitude of the angular momentum transport and the patterns and saturated values of magnetic field over a range of parameter values were also quantified.
