Abstract

The authors have set up a cusptron device to compare the performance of pi -mode and 2 pi -mode operation at eighth harmonic interaction. A concentric rotating electron beam (e-layer) of 30 keV ( gamma equals 1. 06) is produced for wave generation. For 2 pi -mode operation, an eight-slotted waveguide with b/a equals 22 is used, where b and a are the radii of the vane and the inner wall of the waveguide, respectively. In order to achieve the same output frequency for comparison, a 16-slotted waveguide with b/a equals 1. 23 is used for pi -mode operation. The arrangement of the set up is described. The preliminary results of the experiments are also presented.
