Abstract
This paper studies flexural properties of vinyl ester-glass hollow particle filled composites for naval applications. Predictive models are developed for estimating the elastic modulus and the flexural strength of hollow particle filled composites at high inclusion volume fraction. Elastic modulus is predicted by applying a differential scheme to the dilute dispersion closed form solution. Flexural strength is estimated by computing the effective load bearing section. Experimental results on a large variety of particulate composites show close agreement between analytical predictions and experimental findings from three-point bending loading tests. The derived closed form solutions can aid the design of lightweight naval composites.
