N2 - In this paper, the feasibility of tracing shallow water flows in illuminated light conditions by using buoyant fluorescent particles is investigated. An automated image analysis-based procedure is developed for on-line detection and real-time tracking of particles using a computationally inexpensive algorithm implemented on recorded videos. The methodology is validated through experiments conducted in a custom-built miniature channel specifically developed for simulating controlled shallow water conditions. Experimental findings suggest that the proposed methodology could be successfully integrated in field flow tracing systems for overland flow velocity.
