Abstract

Shift work can negatively impact work and personal relationships, productivity, and overall health and well-being. People working in a 24-hour work cycle are more prone to sleep loss, fatigue, and accidents; all of which can negatively impact work performance and costs to the employee, company, and society. This paper discusses methods to enhance workplace safety and to reduce the negative effects of shift work. Eleven intervention methods are presented in terms of cost and ease of implementation. A case study using maritime port, which has quite varied work shifts, is used to demonstrate how the recommendations can be applied. The most promising initiatives for maritime port include flexibility, shift rotation, fatigue risk management (FRM), and technical solutions.
