Abstract

The problem of heavy atom quantization was studied using malonaldehyde in the gas phase at room temperature as a prototypical example of intermediate-barrier proton transfer. Quantum effects on proton transfer were clarified. Proton tunneling was enhanced by the quantum nature of the heavy molecular frame atoms.
