'Hot sewers': Experimental evaluation of cip lining systems for high temperature application in sewer pipes

Abstract

In some of the older cities across North America and Europe sewer pipes are used as venues for discharging steam condensate from steam driven HVAC systems. In the event of a malfunction in the discharge system, the sewer pipe might be subjected to direct steam injection. The presence of steam, and the associated elevated temperature, inside the pipe could result in an environment incompatible with standard CIP lining products. An experimental study was undertaken to identify resin-liner combinations that will perform well while exposed to cyclic temperatures of up to 212oF over prolonged periods. The results of the study are intended to provide guidelines for the rehabilitation of sewer pipes scheduled for renewal as part of the reconstruction of Times Square located in Manhattan, New York City. The pipes are subjected to steam condensate injection from adjacent high-rise buildings, and thus might not be suitable candidates for standard CIP relining products.
