    Abstract

The hyperfine structure and isotope shift in the 283.3-nm resonance line of cyclotron-produced 203Pb was measured by absorption spectroscopy with use of a 9.1-m focal-length Czerny-Turner spectrometer. The measured hyperfine interactionconstants in the 6p7s3P1, state are A = 67.1(12) × 10-3cm-1 and B =2(5) × 10-3cm-1. Theresultingnuclear magnetic moment, μ = O.6 7 2 (12)μN, is in reasonable accord with the value predicted by the shell model with core excitation. The measured isotope shift is IS =-195(4) × 10-3cm-1, relative to 208Pb. The resulting odd-even staggering parameter, γ = 0.39(14), lends support to recent calculations of Talmi [Nucl. Phys. A 423, 189 (1984)].
