Management of implant complications by the experts (part 2): Nonsyndromic oligodontia interdisciplinary approach: Challenges and possible complications

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter presents cases with various complications that were treated successfully by experts in the field. It begins with the retention of a hopeless implant followed by the treatment of a malposed implant, both of which were in the esthetic zone. It follows with 2 cases where soft tREFIID repairs were performed to save and improve the esthetics of 2 implants in the esthetic zone. Treatment of an implant with peri-implantitis with bone loss is described by the next expert. This is followed by a case with multiple mechanical complications including fractured solder joints, screws and implants which was treated successfully. The etiology, prevention and treatment necessary to restore this implant supported restoration to function are covered in detail. Lastly, 2 cases of f ailed implants are presented. One in the posterior area which was removed, the socket debrided and a new implant later placed with 5 year follow-up results. The other, a failed implant in the esthetic zone, was treated with site augmentation prior to implant placement. The concomitant procedures which were necessary to achieve the excellent esthetic results are discussed. The results of all of the cases in this chapter show outcomes that any dentist placing and/or restoring implants would be pleased to duplicate. The knowledge learned from seeing how the experts approached and treated these various complications will be invaluable to any dentist interested in implant treatment.
