Abstract
It is relatively easy to construct the biography of a single composer. An artist’s development can be charted in relation to others and to contemporaneous historical and cultural events. Each composer leaves a distinctive footprint of scores and performances; from scores, reviews, recordings, and documented appearances, one can hypothesize the creative processes that led from one composition to the next. From life event to life event, and from work to work, we can construe the relationship between the personal and the professional, marrying psychobiography and aesthetic critique.
