Abstract
Confinement is most commonly characterized by the behavior of VD(R), the gauge-invariant potential energy between an external quark-pair at separation R in the representation D of the gauge structure group SU(N). The bound implies that if the potential between external quarks in the fundamental representation increases linearly at large R, VF(R)∼σR, where σ is the standard string tension.
