Abstract
The hyperfine structure of the 3067-A line of 15-d Bi205 was measured by optical spectroscopy. The results are A(P124)=166(4)×10-3 cm-1, giving μ=4.13(11)μN, and 192(14) × 10-3 cm-1 for the Bi205-Bi209 isotope shift. A reexamination of the Bi207 hfs shows accord with previous spectroscopic results [μ=4.07(2)μN], but not with the recent nuclear orientation finding by Johnston, Kaplan, and Stone that μ(Bi207) is substantially larger than μ(Bi209). Calculations of magnetic moments of odd bismuth isotopes, including configuration mixing and pion-exchange contributions, are in agreement with our experiments.
