Abstract
The unique features of the liquid argon (LAr) time projection chambers (TPC) were discussed. The first module of the ICARUS T600 detector was successfully tested at surface. The scaling up in volume to the full-size detector was successfully achieved, opening the way to the possibility of carrying out the proposed physics program after commissioning of the first T600 detector at the Gran Sasso Laboratory.
