N2 - The conditions for the upper hybrid modes to be excited parametrically by an intense electromagnetic wave near its cut-off have been examined. They show that upper hybrid side-bands can easily be produced in the ionosphere by an obliquely incident wave of ordinary but not extraordinary polarization.
