Abstract

The presence of Kirkendall voids in multifilamentary Nb3Sn superconducting wires prepared by the "bronze-route" has been thought to have an adverse effect on the ductility of the wires. The shape, density and nucleation sites of such voids in commercial Nb/Cu-Sn wires and wires of similar geometry but different scale have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The implications of the results for the mechanical properties are discussed.
