Abstract
A study of thermal instabilities has been carried out that includes both the axial and radial dependences of the plasma temperature. An analysis of the thermal instability by means of a model has shown that the constriction always starts near the electrodes and that it is localized there in weakly ionized gases. In fully ionized gases the construction expands axially over the entire length of the discharge. The nonlinear development of arc constriction also has been studied.
