Abstract

A monolayer film prepared on silicon substrates from ll-[4-(methylthio)phenoxy]-l-(trichlorosilyl)undecane (1) was investigated by FTIR, XPS, ellipsometry, and contact angle measurements. Treatment of this monolayer with hydrogen peroxide in acetic acid resulted in efficient conversion of the surface-localized sulfide group to a sulfoxide group. The resulting hydrophilic surface could be treated successfully with octadecyltrichlorosilane to produce a bilayer film.
