Abstract

Using a collective-coordinate ansatz and multiple scale technique, we have studied the location and nature of breather instabilities, for a homogeneously driven, damped sine-Gordon system (on a finite line) in the nonlinear Schrödinger regime. We find that "phase-pulling" between the spatially localized breather, and the spatially extended uniform background is crucial.
