Abstract

Illumination of aqueous solutions of (NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O (1) in the presence of 2-propanol results in rapid formation of acetone with concomitant formation of a spectroscopically characterized reduced molybdenum species. A reaction sequence is proposed in which the excited state of 1 abstracts H· from the α-carbon atom of the alcohol. The relevance of this reaction to photochemical and thermal C-H activation on heterogeneous metal oxide catalysts is discussed.
