    Abstract

Does political democracy enhance or retard economic growth? The authors begin their discussion of this question through a critical review of pro and anti-democracy arguments. They summarize statistical studies where regime type is considered as a determining factor in economic growth, identifying some of the methodological problems that such studies present. They come to the conclusion that political institutions indeed influence economic growth, though a focus on political regimes apparently does not afford a perception of relevant differences. -English summary
