note = "Funding Information: We were inspired by the initial work of Markos Papageorgiou in using feedback control theory for traffic control problems. The Center for Transportation Research (CTR) at Virginia Tech. provided us with the ideal opportunity to study the design of feedback controllers for various traffic control problems, which include traffic routing/assignment, ramp metering, and signalized intersection. Professor Antoine G. Hobeika was the director of CTR when we started the research. After that, Ray D. Pethtel supported our research a great deal as the interim director, following which Professor Thomas A. Dingus continued the support as he took over the directorship of CTR. The support for the basic research out of which this book evolved came through many projects at CTR mostly funded by the Research Center of Excellence (RCE) from Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
