He has produced almost 450 peer-reviewed articles, influential reviews, and his best-selling book, The Second Brain, published in 1998. Many now consider Dr Gershon to be the “father of the ENS.” He has been continuously funded by National Institutes of Health grants since 1967, including a Jacob Javits award in 1985. He has also had a major impact on his field through the research training of more than 50 students and fellows. He has mentored a large number of physician-scientists who are noted in AGA research and leadership, including both of us ( Photo 2 ). Mike has received numerous awards, including the Camillio Golgi medal (Fidia Fdn), Henry Gray Prize (American Association of Anatomists), AGA Masters Award for Sustained Achievement, and the Lifetime Achievement Award (Society for Neurogastroenterology and Motility).
