Abstract
A quench front is the boundary between the cold part of a slab covered by cooling water flowing along it, and the hot part covered by the resulting steam. The problem of steady propagation of such a front, based on a simple theory, is solved by the Wiener-Hopf method. The solution yields the temperature distribution in the slab and an equation for the speed of the front. This equation is examined asymptotically for both fast and slow fronts.
