Abstract

Penetration of sand is described with a Poncelet equation. Values of Poncelet parameters that can be used for a generic quartz sand were derived from the literature and from new experiments at relatively low velocities. Values of the Poncelet drag parameter and 0.85 and resisting strength of 500 kPa should be used to estimate penetration, unless specific data for the soils of interest are available.
