Abstract
The original Hamilton and Seidensticker model may explain the
anisotropic growth of nonionic fcc crystals, provided stringent
requirements for the nucleation of one-dimensional clusters (i.e.,
strings) are satisfied. However, revisions that account for the drop in
the coordination number during growth are necessary for the general
applicability of the model.
