N2 - A research symposium hosted by the Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education at the University of Maryland concentrated on the need for a research-based information to fill the gaps in science education in urban areas. The symposium brought together new researchers in the areas of science education, urban education, and school reform. A concentrated effort was made to identify and invite science education graduate students from diverse background. A presentation done by Parmela Fraser-Abder focused on research linking greater instructional program coherence with enhancement of student achievement in science and strategies for taking more realistic approach toward reform efforts. Participants recommended a research agenda in urban science education that would focus on achievement and identity, students, teachers, and policy within the contextual framework.
